Grade Guru: New online experience

Did you miss class today and need the notes? Did today’s lecture confuse you and you need some clarification? If so, you may want to visit the site Grade Guru. Senior communication major Tara Aris is interning for the website this semester as a “Campus Brand Ambassador,” and she thinks this product is very beneficial for students.
“It allows students who aren’t good note takers to get a fresh outlook on class notes,” Aris said.
Grade Guru was developed in 2009 as a different type of social media site. Users can create an account and upload class notes, as well as look at other students’ notes. Aris said users cannot communicate with other users, but they can comment on posts. This website is also beneficial for students who post notes.
“People who post notes get rewards for good notes. If you reach 1,500 you can get something like a Starbucks gift card,” Aris said.
Throughout the semester, Aris promoted Grade Guru on campus and received both positive and negative feedback.
“People say they don’t have time to post notes. I try to have them make it a part of their weekly routines,” she said.
Aris also mentioned that students who have time for Facebook also have enough time for Grade Guru.
Communication professor Dr. Sufyan Mohammed thinks Grade Guru is moving teaching into the future.
“I’ve had students complain that teaching isn’t moving forward with technology. I think this is a beautiful program for moving teaching forward,” he said.
Mohammed has heard positive things about this program from his students.
“They have told me that their study time is better managed with Grade Guru,” he said.
Although this site makes class notes more accessible to students, Mohammed does not think it allows them to be lazy.
“I think lazy students will always find the easy way out,” he said. “But I think it requires them to study and read through the material.”
Senior Frantz Lucien has not found the site beneficial.
“I think the problems are in its practicality. People like to take notes because they make sense to them,” he said. “If other’s notes are uploaded I may have a hard time understanding them.”
Although Lucien made an account, he has not used it.
Aris encouraged students to create Grade Guru accounts. She even got her housemates to use the site.
“My housemate is a business major and I used her notes to answer a question I had,” she said.
Aris said it is easy and free to create an account. Just log onto www.gradeguru.com and search “The University of Scranton.”
